This is the design for Mario on the cabinet art of the original Super Mario Bro’s game. No, not that one, the weird one where you just try to kill Koopas and Spineys as they spawn out of pipes. The one where you hit the POW block to flip everyone on the ground, including your brother, getting him killed, wasting his quarter, and “ruining” another birthday party. Boo hoo, should have gotten to it first.
I love this little munchkin. Astute Toy Archivist viewer might note a few peculiar things about this particular design, namely the color, proportions, relative level of gonk, weird cat ear nubs, and general whacko-craziness of his whole look. Let’s just say Nintendo would go in a more marketable image for the character in later games.
